Ah Leng Char Koay Teow (亚龙炒粿条) is a must-go if you have any guests visiting Penang. Unlike other famous char koay teow stalls in Penang, Ah Leng’s place relatively “local”. It used to be a place where only locals know and love. But over the years, Mr. Leng’s stall has established itself far and wide beyond the borders of Penang.
This visit is just to give our guests a taste of Ah Leng’s skillful concoction, so we only ordered a plate of the Special Char Koay Teow (RM10.50) to share around.
Each serving consists of 4 large shrimps and 4 mantis shrimps (虾蛄). The shrimps are fresh and succulent, giving a sweet crunch when one’s teeth sink into it.
Like any good char koay teow hawker, there are also some cockles (蚶), which is not too impressive actually. But I do not think this matters.
Other ingredients are the Chinese chives (韭菜), bean sprouts and eggs. For eggs, there is an option to upgrade to duck eggs for RM0.50, which we did.
How did our guests find the food? Let’s just say that it is now in their itinerary whenever they drop by Penang!
