Although Martin Yan’s filming at Golden Sands Resort has concluded two months ago, it is always a pleasure to pay another visit to this seaside resort at Batu Ferringhi.
Sigi’s Bar & Grill On The Beach is one of the two eateries at Golden Sands Resort. Whether to grab a cool drink after an exhilarating day at the seaside, or to enjoy a wholesome meal in an ambient setting, this restaurant is a popular destination for many holidaymakers.
Since last month, Sigi’s Bar & Grill has been featuring a limited-time Burger Mania menu. Five different types of burgers are available, giving diners a wide variety of patty choices such as beef, lamb, chicken and fish. Each order of these American-sized burgers includes a glass of carbonated beverage.
The meal this evening starts with the SBG Smoked Salmon Caesar Salad (RM44.00). Juicy romaine lettuce is tossed with garlic-flavored croutons, light Caesar dressing and grated parmesan cheese. In addition, two succulent pieces of smoked salmon provide salty appeal to this delightful appetizer.
Moving on to burgers, one of the most popular ones is the Charcoal Bread Burger (RM50.00). As the name implies, toasted charcoal bun is the main highlight of this burger. Served on the side are lightly-salted nachos chips.
Sandwiched within the charcoal bun is 200 grams of ground beef patty. As I sink my teeth into the beef, I can feel the genuine taste of meaty goodness. For such a large patty, the charcoal bun appears inadequate by contrast. I think the charcoal bun should be made thicker for more balanced taste.
Other ingredients in this delectable burger are bacon, mozzarella cheese, iceberg lettuce and tomato. BBQ sauce, tomato ketchup and garlic aioli are used as condiments.
Throughout the month of August 2015, the Durian Cheese Chicken Burger (RM45.00) will be available too. This burger uses a sesame bun which I feel is arguably nicer than the charcoal bun. Once again, crispy nachos chips are provided on the side.
What makes this burger stand out among its peers is the patty itself. Packing 200 grams of chicken breast, this wholesome patty is stuffed with thick paste made from durian and Philadelphia cream cheese. As I puncture the patty, hot durian-cheese paste oozes out in a tantalizing manner.
As far as palate is concerned, I think that chicken flavor still plays the dominant role. If durian were to take the center stage, the paste needs to be made thicker. The use of cream cheese with durian is not the best marriage; I recommend another type of cheese with sticky consistency, such that the durian-cheese paste forms better bond with meat patty.
Tonight’s burger tasting session serves to seek our feedback, so that Sigi’s Bar & Grill can fine-tune the recipe before actual introduction of this burger next month. Executive Chef Adrian Lim has taken note of our comments and suggestions.
Warm Durian Butter Cake (RM23.00) is served as tonight’s dessert. The taste of durian is mild in order not to overwhelm the taste buds. On the side is a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a piece of chocolate shard, whipped cream, chocolate syrup and fresh strawberry. This treat is usually served at Garden Cafe, the other eatery at Golden Sands Resort.
As for drinks, Ginger and Orange Mojito (RM16.00) is a mocktail made from ginger beer, orange slices, mint sprigs, lime wedges and cane sugar. Its fizzy and tangy sensation makes this beverage an ideal choice to quench thirst.

Directions: Driving from George Town and upon arriving Batu Ferringhi, Golden Sands Resort is located on the right at the first traffic junction. The main entrance to the hotel is located slightly after the junction. Sigi’s Bar & Grill is located towards the far side of the resort, after the pools and facing the beach.
