Special thanks to Mulgogi for extending this food review invitation.

Update: This business has ceased its operations.

Located at the LG Floor of Sunway Carnival Mall, Mulgogi (물고기) is a dessert kiosk which specializes in Korean-style snacks. Although inspired by popular snacks in Korea, the recipe here is developed locally.

“Mulgogi” means “fish” in Korean. This name is fitting as its food menu carries fish themes. The most prominent aspect is the use of waffle irons in the shape of fish. The resulting snack is similar in appearance to bungeoppang (붕어빵), but is made crispier and less surfeiting.

To prepare the fish-shaped snack, flour batter is poured into the two-sided mold. A block in at the center allows the mulgogi to be hollow, where ice cream is to be added later.

Known as Mulgogi Ice Cream (RM9.90), there are two ice cream flavors to choose from: chocolate (초콜릿) or green tea (말차). For the latter, red beans (단팥) are added so that the ice cream does not make direct contact with the pastry. The ice cream is made from matcha and is the soft-serve type. Finally, chocolate cream cookie, cookie crumbs and Pepero (빼빼로) cookie stick are used as toppings.

If you prefer a hot snack, the Mulgogi Croissant is a better option. Using a smaller mold, flour batter is embedded with fillings while the mini mulgogi is still in liquid state.

There are 4 types of fillings available: premium chocolate (RM4.90), green tea with red beans (RM4.90), chicken floss (말린고기조미채, RM5.90) and tuna (참치, RM5.90). The last one includes mayonnaise which gives slightly tangy flavor. Be careful when eating the snack because it can be very hot at the center.

Mulgogi also has several canned and packet drinks that are specially imported from Korea. For example, Milkis (밀키스, RM2.90) is a fizzy carbonated drink with sweet-tangy flavors such as peach, yogurt, melon and strawberry. Manufactured by Lotte Chilsung (롯데칠성) and wildly popular in Korea, this drink is an excellent thirst-quencher.

Nearly all ingredients at Mulgogi are imported from Korea because local versions do not have sufficient quality to make the cut. Nevertheless, the prices remain reasonably affordable as Mulgogi aims to serve the general crowd.
