Balik Pulau is renowned for asam laksa and nutmegs. One place to experience these specialties is Kafe Chuan Heong (川香茶室) at the town center.
The kopitiam’s signature dish is Laksa Balik Pulau (浮罗叻沙, RM4.00). The shop retains the same broth recipe that regular customers have enjoyed for many years.
The fish broth is quite satisfying. The presence of tamarind makes the dish even more appetizing. Customers can add shrimp paste (虾膏) for extra savoriness.
White Nutmeg Juice (白豆蔻汁, RM2.00) can be served warm or iced. Infused with sour plum (酸梅), the drink is an excellent thirst quencher.
Kafe Chuan Heong is packed with customers on weekends, so it can be a challenge to secure a seat. Due to poor ventilation, the eatery is unpleasantly warm and humid. Houseflies are also a nuisance here.
