White House in the Penang Times Square is an almost-perfect knock-off the OldTown White Coffee concept. It belongs to the same company which operates The Little Nyonya Cuisine restaurant outlets in Gurney Plaza and Queensbay Mall.
One advice when you are not sure what to order: Look for menu items that have the restaurant’s name in it. Most likely, those are their signature dishes. And if those dishes don’t turn out well, you can imagine how the other non-signature dishes will be.
Taking this guideline into consideration, I ordered a White House Nasi Lemak Special (RM8.30). The best that I can say about the food is the reasonable amount of coconut milk (santan) rice in the middle. The fried chicken is tragically small in comparison. The chili condiment (sambal) also tastes funny and cold. The other ingredients (egg, crackers, peanuts and cucumber slices) are just typical. It makes me wonder how they set the bar for “Special”.
As for the drink, I ordered the White House White Coffee (RM3.50). Alright, I think the coffee is something more worthwhile. I like the coffee’s aroma and smooth taste.
My advice is to just come here for drinks and have your meal elsewhere.
