Ah Lim Birthday Mee (正宗亚林生日面) is one of the stalls here. I ordered a serving of Birthday Mee (生日面, RM4.00) with additional prawns for RM2.00. Also known as Nyonya Lam Mee (娘惹淋面), Birthday Mee is traditionally eaten on birthdays as a symbol of longevity.
The gravy for Birthday Mee is prepared by simmering pork bones, pork rind and prawn shells for several hours. Other ingredients in this dish are yellow noodles, rice vermicelli (米粉), shredded chicken, bean sprouts, garlic chives, coriander, fried shallots and sambal (chili paste).
Operating since 1983, Penang Seang Lim Toptaste Prawn Mee King (橡陵虾蛄虾面王) is another prominent stall here. I ordered a bowl of Prawn Mee (虾面, RM4.50) with extra mantis prawns (虾蛄) and pork ribs for RM4.00.
The prawn broth is appetizing indeed; I enjoyed it to the last drop. In my opinion, the use of mantis prawns is somewhat wasteful as the taste is overwhelmed by the broth. Meanwhile, the pork ribs are not so flavorful because the broth did not penetrate them entirely.
