Remember the dim sum brunch at The Emperor, Dorsett Grand Subang? From 15 May 2024 to 31 August 2024, the Chinese restaurant is expanding its menu with a curated selection of classic Shanghainese dim sum. Besides allowing the elderly to reminisce about old-fashioned recipes, The Emperor also hopes to introduce younger diners to the exquisite flavors of Shanghainese dim sum.

The Dining Atmosphere

The restaurant’s décor is quaint and nostalgic. Arriving customers are greeted by a wooden bridge similar to those seen in Chinese gardens of Suzhou.

For customers who prefer a more intimate dining experience, The Emperor offers three private dining rooms of varying sizes: Chien-Lung, Cheng Zu and Tai-Tsung. At this point, it is worthwhile to note that The Emperor is a Muslim-friendly restaurant.

Introducing New Dim Sum Delicacies

Besides the familiar dim sum choices that most Malaysians know and love, here are several new choices that hail from Shanghai!

Shanghai Traditional Glutinous Rice & Chicken Meat

This dim sum features glutinous rice dumpling filled with savory meat, and rolled in additional glutinous rice. After steaming, the outer surface becomes soft and translucent.

A basket of 3 pieces is priced at RM15 nett.

Each bite delivers a burst of flavor and juiciness from the savory meat filling. The chewy texture of the rice skin adds an extra layer of enjoyment.

Shanghai Soup Dumplings with Five Flavors

Within Shanghainese cookbooks, xiaolongbao stands out as the quintessential specialty. Each of the five vibrant colors are created using natural ingredients:

Each of these dumplings are filled with a unique combination of meat and broth. The proper way to enjoy xiaolongbao is to make a small bite, drink the savory broth inside, and then enjoy the remainder with ginger slivers and vinegar!

Pan Fried “Shanghai” Dumplings

Likewise, each of these dumplings derives its color naturally from fruits and vegetables. The dumpling is lightly fried such that the skin is slightly charred and delightfully chewy.

As for the filling, each dumpling contains minced meat and vegetables like chives and Napa cabbage. This results in satisfying flavors without feeling overwhelmed!

Pan-fried “Shanghai” Chicken Bun

These buns are cooked such that the base is crispy and slightly toasted. Meanwhile, the buns are still quite soft on the inside and contain savory chicken filling.

Shanghai Lotus with Egg Yolk and Plum Flower

One of my personal favorites is this golden pastry which contians sweet lotus paste and preserved vegetables.

Homemade Scallion Pancake

The crispy pancake contains just the right amount of scallions and shrimps. With the taste slightly sweet, the dish is also well-suited for children to enjoy.

Chili Oil with Prawn Dumpling

This another popular choice that you should not miss! The spicy oil is not a mere afterthought, but is specially formulated to complement the plump dumpling perfectly!

Rice Roll with Yam Bean and Dried Shrimp

The rice roll contains large shrimps and juicy shreds of jicama. This appetizing dish is best enjoyed with some sweet sauce.

Big Bowl Noodles

In addition to dim sum, The Emperor also offers Big Bowl Noodles for a limited time until 31 August 2024. Although the menu suggests that each bowl is suitable for 2 or 3 diners, we think it is large enough to feed 5 people!

Slipper Lobster and Seaweed with Shanghai Noodles in Superior Soup

This flavorful soup noodle dish is a clear standout! Infused with seaweed, the rich broth has a complex blend of flavors.

Shanghai noodles are renowned for their superior texture. Unlike some other types of noodles that can become soggy and surfeiting, Shanghai noodles remain delightfully springy even after being soaked in broth.

But the true star is the slipper lobster. Its succulent flesh elevates the dish to an entirely new level. What a truly irresistible combination of flavors!

Giant Grouper with Special Vermicelli in Salted Vegetable Soup

Should you prefer something tangy, this is the perfect choice for you. Tender, succulent slices of giant grouper provide a delightful contrast to the zesty broth. Relish the thick rice noodles (special vermicelli) one spoonful at a time! Also included are fresh kailan (Chinese kale) that offers juicy and crunchy texture.

Flying Noodles with Deep-fried Water Prawns and Crab Meat in Egg White Sauce

The deep-fried prawns are paired with savory gravy made of seafood and eggs. For this dish, crispy fried noodles are preferred as it takes a while to soften in the thick gravy.
