While many time-honored establishments amidst the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur’s Petaling Street, particularly traditional dim sum teahouses, have succumbed to the relentless tide of change, a beacon of culinary heritage has emerged. Restoran Kwong Sum proudly opened its doors in January 2024.

The Signboard

The eye-catching feature on this old street is undoubtedly the ‘Golden Signboard.’ The concise and powerful inscription on the wooden plaque, with its lively font, makes it a rare artistic masterpiece.

We’ve heard that this signboard was a collaboration between renowned local artists Khoo Boon Want and Taka Chang, inspired by the calligraphy of Master HK Pang.

The artwork on the wall features a diverse cast of characters, each unique and not repeating. As you carefully examine the details, memories from the past come flooding back—both nostalgic and bittersweet. The painting captures scenes like boiling water over charcoal, dim sum carts, and even intense negotiations among underworld bosses. Not to mention the patrons discreetly spitting into spittoons—it’s a rich tapestry of moments that truly captivates!

In addition, the overall décor of the teahouse is quite simple and elegant; if you happen to be visiting Petaling Street from afar, then coming here to enjoy traditional dim sum is a great choice!

Enjoy the beautiful scenery from the upstairs of the teahouse.

Besides steamed and fried dim sum, this restaurant also offers rice, porridge and other dishes, providing a diverse range of culinary options.

Let’s Start Our Dim Sum

Shao Mai

Also known as Siu Mai. Inside the delicate wrappers lies a flavorful combination of ground pork and juicy shrimp. The texture is moist and not overly dense, making it a delightful choice.

Stewed Nam Yu Pork Bao

The pork strips marinated in Nam Yu (fermented beancurd) strike a delightful balance between savory and sweet, while the steamed bun wrapper is soft and fluffy. However, the closure point of the bun could be more refined.

The pork strips feature a harmonious blend of lean and fatty meat, offering a delightful interplay of textures.

Basil Leaf Chicken Dumpling

Featuring a delectable blend of minced chicken and its perfect partner – basil, this dish is designed to leave a lingering taste of satisfaction on every palate.

Portuguese Tart

The crisp pastry serves as a delightful base for the rich and flavorful egg custard. While the pastry’s exceptional crunch is impressive, it doesn’t overshadow the star of the show: the sumptuous egg filling.

A testament to the generous filling-to-crust ratio, each bite is a harmonious blend of textures and flavors.

Golden Sand Custard Bao

Eat it while it’s hot to enjoy the molten filling!

Chicken Glutinous Rice

A classic delicacy, this glutinous rice chicken combines the savory flavors of mushrooms, Chinese sausage, and chicken.

Cantonese Sponge Cake

Or some call Ma Lai Gao. This delicacy is believed to have originated in Southeast Asia, possibly Malaysia. The cake’s name suggests that it may have been introduced to China by immigrants.

In general, the dim sum at this establishment is of above-average quality, although the prices tend to be on the higher side. However, the overall ambiance is comfortable and inviting. For visitors to Petaling Street who are seeking a dim sum experience, this venue may be a nice choice.
