Established in 1923, Oh Swee Len (瑞麟饼家) is a family-owned pastry brand based in Batang Kali, Selangor. With a history that spans over a century, the family business is under the stewardship of the third generation, Leonard Oh. Having an unwavering commitment to tradition, the bakery seamlessly blends time-honored Hokkien recipes with contemporary aesthetics. The presence of Oh Swee Len ensures that these traditional delicacies continue to stay relevant in modern times.

The Tradition of Lao Huei & Mua Lao

Oh Swee Len specializes in two traditional pastries: Lao Huei (蓼花) and Mua Lao (麻蓼). The name “Lao Huei” traces back to Empress Dowager Cixi, who admired the vibrant colors of the knotweed flower. Indeed, the pastry’s red-and-white rice coating bears resemblance to the eponymous flower. On the other hand, Mua Lao is named after the sesame coating of the pastry. In the context of Fujian wedding customs, Lao Huei represents the bride while Mua Lao symbolizes the groom. It is customary for these pastries to be presented in pairs as even numbers are believed to bring good fortune.

The traditional process of making of Lao Huei and Mua Lao is a labor of love that takes seven days. The inner dough needs to be steamed, boiled, sun-dried, deep-fried and coated with sugar. Visitors can see trays of dough being dried under the sun in front of the shop. The sun-drying process is crucial for the dough to achieve its distinctive texture.

Besides the traditional white sesame Mua Lao, Leonard also innovated a modern version that combines black and white sesame seeds. The mixture offers a delightful contrast of flavor and texture between bites.

Even the smallest leftovers from the manufacturing process are not gone to waste. Scrap dough is made into bite-sized snacks that appeal to children. What a nice way to introduce these traditional pastries to the younger generation!
