Update: This business has ceased its operations.
For this year’s Mooncake Festival (Mid-Autumn Festival, 中秋节), there a wide variety of mooncakes on sale. This includes Traditional Mooncakes (传统月饼), Shanghai Mooncakes (上海月饼), Jelly Mooncakes (燕菜月饼) and Gongzai Biscuits (公仔饼).
Today’s mooncakes are yet different: Spiral Mooncakes (千层酥皮月饼) made by 100 Homemade 家制, a home-based bakery in Sungai Ara. Spiral Mooncakes have distinctively many layers that flake off rather easily. This gives the pastry an “airy” texture that improves mouthfeel of the sweet lotus paste in within.
There are 6 types of flavors of Spiral Mooncakes: Green Tea (绿茶), Pumpkin (金瓜), Yam (芋头) and Chocolate (巧克力), Coffeemisu (咖啡米苏) and Rose Tea (玫瑰花茶). Despite the vibrant colors, only natural coloring is used. Each Spiral Mooncake is individually sealed to maintain freshness.
The Green Tea version is arguably my favorite one today. The mild, pleasant flavor of green tea works well with my palate. Its taste is not overpowering in any way.
Meanwhile, the yellow-colored Pumpkin variant can benefit from having higher pumpkin composition. Apart from that, it is quite delectable overall.
As for the Yam mooncake, I find the presence of taro to be compatible with lotus paste. However, I think the amount of sugar should be toned down as taro is inherently sweet already.
Finally, the Chocolate version is the most unorthodox one among the four types here. Although the essence of chocolate is clearly prominent, I feel that its taste becomes disconnected from the pastry. Perhaps I am more comfortable with traditional mooncake ingredients.
Spiral Mooncakes are available with yolk (RM13.00) or without yolk (RM12.00). There is also a smaller version of the mooncakes, which is also available with yolk (RM8.00) or without yolk (RM7.00). Apart from Spiral Mooncakes, Gongzai Biscuits (RM15.00 for 10 pieces, RM27.00 for 20 pieces) are also on sale.
Mooncake orders to 100 Homemade can be made through Facebook or by phone. Delivery is free for minimum order of 4 boxes. In addition, customers can also collect their pre-ordered mooncakes at the proprietor’s residence at Desaria, Sungai Ara.
