Update: This business has ceased its operations.
Sangkaya made its debut several months ago, but today is when I finally got to find out what the hype is all about. Located at the Basement level of Gurney Plaza, Sangkaya specializes in coconut ice cream.
There are two types of ice cream to choose from: Coconut and Cha Yen (ชาเย็น). The latter is based on the popular Thai milk tea. Sangkaya’s ice cream is available in 3 portion sizes: Signature (4 scoops, RM10.50), Cup (3 scoops, RM7.30) and Cone (1 scoop, RM3.10). For the first two, it is permissible to have mixture of ice cream flavors.
My choice of toppings for the Signature portion (3 toppings) is coconut flakes, sweet corn and kidney beans. Other available choices are roasted peanuts, cereal, corn flakes and chocolate sauce.
In terms of taste, I think Sangkaya’s ice cream is sweeter than my comfortable range. However, I think this is a calculated decision considering the general palate of customers. Meanwhile, the level of overrun is too high compared to Mama-Miya. This results in slushy consistency that is more associated to fruit sorbet. I personally prefer my ice cream to be denser and creamier.
