Special thanks to De’ Corner for extending this food review invitation.
Update: This business has ceased its operations.
Residents of Tanjung Tokong should be familiar with De’ Corner Kitchen. This restaurant along the main road is open in the evening, as its ambience is much better after the sun has set.
The large compound allows many outdoor dining tables. Nevertheless, there are also several tables indoors for customers who prefer air-conditioning.
My previous visit to De’ Corner was to sample its noodle soup. As of today, the noodle station has been moved to the back of the building to make it more accessible on rainy days.
In addition to its signature noodles, De’ Corner has rolled out a new à la carte menu recently. The menu consists of mostly Western dishes with elements of Asian recipes.
One of the recommended dishes is Ms Nyonya (RM15.90). Upon serving, fragrance of local spices immediately greets the nasal cavity. The deep-fried chicken chop is flavored with sweet-and-sour sauce and kerabu. The kerabu is a Malay salad made from julienned carrot and cucumber. Young mango is avoided as some people are not used to its tanginess.
The chicken chop is coated with crispy coating of crumbs, which upon contact with the sauce, provides an interesting sense of pleasure on the palate. Covered with bird’s eye chili (小辣椒) and ginger flower (姜花), the chicken packs a respectable dose of spiciness. Onions and garlic are also used for seasoning.
De’ Corner recently welcomed a Dutch chef on vacation, and upon exchanging culinary knowledge, culminated in the invention of a new dish: Seafood Tom Yum Spaghetti (RM24.90). This dish uses Thai-style spices as the gravy for pasta, which is quite unlike the dairy-based ones typically used for Italian pasta.
Seafood ingredients include two mussels and two shrimps of reasonable size. Squid rings are also used to take advantage of appetizing tom yum flavors. I appreciate the creative assimilation of Italian pasta with Thai-style spiciness.
As Seafood Tom Yum Spaghetti is a new dish, De’ Corner offers 20% discount off the regular price from now till Chinese New Year.
During my previous visit, it has been established that drinks is also De’ Corner’s forte. Today, more drinks like Coconut Milk Shake (RM8.90) have been added to the extensive beverage menu. Made primarily from fresh coconut water, this drink also contains grated coconut kernel and vanilla ice cream.
As many dishes here are spicy, it is thoughtful for De’ Corner to formulate a handful of remedies for ill-prepared tongues. One example is Lemon Rock (RM11.90). This ice blended drink is made from lemon, lime, sour plum, salt and honey. The combination of sharp sourness and mild saltiness helps to alleviate burning sensation on the tongue within a moment’s notice.
Food at De’ Corner comes in reasonably large portion, making each serving quite filling for most people. In addition, students enjoy 10% discount off the total bill.
