Mellowcup Cafe is located at New Bob Centre, a commercial building opposite of Penang Chinese Girls’ High School.
The café is operated by a professional barista who has learnt the art from Taiwan. According to the owner, the word “mellow” refers to sweet aroma at the conclusion of a coffee session here.
Mellowcup Cafe strives to educate the public on coffee. For example, different degrees of roasting result in a spectrum of flavors from fruitiness to bitterness. Each geographical region also produces Arabica beans with vary degree of flavor, aroma and body.
Mellowcup Cafe is in the testing phase of a new coffee blend from Blooms. This brand was popularized by Hong Kong artist Moses Chan (陈豪) who serves as the brand ambassador. If the response is favorable, Mellowcup Cafe intends to use this blend as its primary choice of beans.
A cup of Caffe Latte (RM9.90) comes with double ristretto. A ristretto is different from a standard shot in the sense that it is extracted using less water. Although the beans have medium roast, the first sip is met with very bold flavor. However, this bold flavor diminishes after a couple of sips as the pleasant effect of milk kicks in.
Besides coffee, Mellowcup Cafe also serves light food such as sandwiches, pasta and cakes.
To educate the public on basic coffee knowledge, Mellowcup Cafe will be conducting casual coffee classes soon. The goal is to allow participants to understand the process of making coffee from beans to brew, and how to distinguish good coffee from bad ones.

New Bob Centre is a commercial building further down. Mellowcup Cafe is one of the shops at the ground level, several shops away from Sa Rang Chae. Street parking is available.
