Special thanks to The Glenlivet for extending this event invitation.
The Glenlivet is one of the oldest brands of Scotch whisky in the world, having operated nearly continuously since its founding in 1824. The Glenlivet Guardians is an exclusive club which brings the whisky-loving community together. The Penang chapter was launched 2 years ago and is some 2,000-strong now. This evening, The Glenlivet Guardians hosts a tasting session in The Glass House at Hin Bus Depot.
Scotch whisky, or “Scotch” for short, is distilled from malted barley and aged in wooden casks (barrels). By law, scotch must be distilled, aged and bottled in Scotland. 3 aged labels are featured today: 12, 15 and 18 years of age. The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve, a non-age statement label, is also poured this evening.
Pairing whisky with nasi kandar may sound unorthodox to many, but let’s keep our minds open. Today’s nasi kandar comprises of fried chicken, fish roe, curried squid, salted egg, lady’s fingers (okra) and curried rice. Overall, I feel that the 12-year age label works best with nasi kandar.
Apam telur is a sweet pancake with an egg on top. The savoriness of egg allows The Glenlivet 18 Years Of Age to bring out its full flavor. Whisky can be enjoyed “neat” (without diluting) or diluted with water or ice. I think some ice helps to alleviate the burning sensation in the throat.
