Special thanks to The Ship for extending this food review invitation.
The Ship is a chain of ship-themed restaurants in Klang Valley and Penang. According to the Malaysia Book of Records, it is the longest operating Western restaurant chain in the country. Today’s lunch brings me to the George Town outlet at Jalan Sri Bahari, which has been operating for more than 3 decades. The front section of the restaurant resembles a ship’s bow.
The Ship is designed in the likeness of a seafaring vessel. Extensive use of wooden elements makes the dining area reminiscent of a ship’s cabin. There is also a large room that can accommodate 100 diners for private events. In addition, staff members are dressed in white naval uniforms with rank insignias, keeping in character with the theme of this restaurant.
Before the meal commences, diners are given freshly baked bread rolls with butter to keep the appetite up. As for the salad, it comes with a choice of dressing: French, mayonnaise or Thousand Islands.
The Ship is renowned for its premium Australian steaks. The bestselling beef cut is the Charbroiled Rib Eye Steak (RM71.90). The recommended doneness is medium in order to retain the beef’s juicy and tender texture. The steak is indeed succulent to the last morsel.
The Charbroiled Rib Eye Steak is served with baked potato, corn on the cob and assorted vegetables. I am particularly fond of the baked potato. It is elegantly garnished with chicken bacon, sour cream and chopped scallions.
As for drinks, today’s choice is Premium Ice Blended Cappuccino (RM13.90). This chilled coffee drink is topped with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles.
The Ship is definitely one of the best steakhouses in Penang. According to the staff, other signature dishes here are seafood and poultry, which I am sure that I will order during my next visit. Last but not least, it is important to note that The Ship does not serve pork.
