Special thanks to Jazz Hotel Penang for extending this food review invitation.
Jazz Hotel Penang is an upscale hotel near Straits Quay and Tesco Tanjung Pinang. Opened in February 2019, the property is under the same management as VOUK Hotel Suites.
As the name implies, Jazz Hotel pays tribute to the classic Jazz Age. The hotel lobby is decorated with posh couches and gramophones. F&B outlets in Jazz Hotel are Jazz Feast, Kitano @ Jazz, Strings & Sax and Pool Bar.
Jazz Feast on Level 2 is the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant. Like the lobby, Jazz Feast is also decorated with jazz ornaments and memorabilia. The purpose of my visit today is to review the Jazzy Sunday Brunch Buffet. The menu consists of local favorites and international flavors.
Thanks to glossy skin, the Chinese-Style Roasted Chicken looks visually appealing. The chicken’s taste is acceptable, but I think it is somewhat dry on the inside. The roast chicken is served with a special blend of chili sauce.
I personally prefer the Western-Style Roasted Chicken. Unlike the Chinese counterpart, the roast chicken remains fairly tender and juicy. As for seasoning, this dish comes with demi-glace in a sauce boat.
Moving to seafood, Mussels In Spicy Tomato Coulis Gravy are highly recommended. I am surprised that firm mussel meat goes rather well with the tangy seasoning. This dish is elegantly garnished with herbs and cherry tomatoes.
Another recommended seafood dish is Fish Curry With Okra. The choice of fish is pomfret. I enjoy the creamy curry as it is rich in coconut milk. Meanwhile, juicy tomatoes lend some tanginess. This spicy dish goes well with Biryani Rice.
Nyonya Lemak Laksa uses thick fish broth that is specially formulated by Executive Chef Alex. Diners can mix ingredients like thick rice noodle, cucumber, shallots, chili peppers, torch ginger and mint leaves. Shrimp paste is optional but is highly recommended.
Diners may request for à la minute pasta from the action counter. Pasta types are penne, spaghetti, farfalle and fusilli. Pasta can be cooked with arrabbiata, napolitana or carbonara sauces. If you prefer pasta with olive oil, opt for aglio olio instead.
Nyonya kuih are presented in an elegant tiffin carrier. Shown here are kuih lapis (layered cake), kuih seri muka (glutinous rice with pandan custard), kuih bingka ubi (tapioca cake) and pulut tai tai (blue glutinous rice cake).
An electric ice shaver prepares shaved ice for Ais Kacang and Cendol. Popular ingredients for these desserts are crushed peanuts, jelly noodle, grass jelly, nata de coco, sweet corn and more. Gula melaka (palm sugar), coconut milk and rose syrup are provided too.
Sago Gula Melaka is a pudding made of sago pearls. The pudding is nearly tasteless on its own. This is why it is always eaten with gula melaka and coconut milk. Other desserts include Red Velvet Cake, Blueberry Sponge Cake, Cheesecake, Crème Caramel and several types of Fruit Jellies.
Jazzy Sunday Brunch Buffet is served from 12:00pm to 2:30pm every Sunday. The price is RM68.00 net per adult, and RM48.00 per child or senior citizen. Children below the age of 3 years dine for free. Note that Jazz Feast is a pork-free restaurant
