Evergreen Laurel Hotel Penang is a 5-star hotel at Gurney Drive (Persiaran Gurney). Managed under Evergreen International Hotels, this is the group’s sole property in Malaysia. Evergreen Laurel Hotel has two F&B outlets: Café Laurel and Lobby Lounge. Both are located at the Lobby Level.
Café Laurel is the all-day dining restaurant. The à la carte menu covers a range of local delights and Western cuisine. This eatery is also where in-house guests have breakfast in the morning.
Our dinner begins with the All Time Favorite Homemade Tossed Caesar Salad (RM28.00). Dressed with olive oil, the salad comprises of Romaine lettuce, hard-boiled eggs, cherry tomatoes, croutons and grated Parmesan cheese. The actual salad portion is twice the amount shown on each plate.
Premium Cut Sirloin Steak (RM49.00) uses top-of-the-line beef cut. As requested, the steak is cooked medium-rare such that the center remains pink and succulent. The steak is flavored with black pepper sauce, buttered vegetables and potato wedges.
As for poultry, Crispy Oriental Style Chicken Chop (RM33.00) is recommended. Boneless chicken thigh is coated with spiced batter, and then deep-fried to golden crispiness. The chicken is dressed with classic Hainanese sauce. Fresh salad and potato wedges are served on the side.
Moving on to desserts, the old-fashioned Apple Pie (RM24.00) comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Flavored with cinnamon, the apple filling is satisfying indeed. I also enjoy the crumbly crust. Apple Pie comes with vanilla sauce and fresh fruits.
Meanwhile, Banana Ferry (RM37.00) is split lengthwise and is presented in a glass boat. The dessert also contains three scoops of Häagen-Dazs ice cream: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavors. Banana Ferry is further garnished with chocolate wafer rolls and whipped cream.
As for drinks, espresso-based coffee like Cappuccino (RM12.00) is available. Hot tea such as English Breakfast Tea (RM12.00) is brewed in a tea bag. Sugar and artificial sweetener are provided.
Besides the à la carte menu, Café Laurel offers buffet dinner every Friday and Saturday. High tea buffet is served on weekends and public holidays. In addition, the restaurant can cater buffet dinner on weekdays whenever there is confirmed booking of at least 25 people.
