Special thanks to DoubleTree Resort By Hilton Penang for extending this food review invitation.
Makan Kitchen is the flagship restaurant of DoubleTree Resort Penang. The al fresco eatery is located next to the swimming pool. The dining area is designed to feature several action stalls.
This evening, I am joining the Seafood BBQ Night at Makan Kitchen. The buffet dinner is served every Saturday starting 6:30pm.
As the name implies, Seafood BBQ Night features a variety of grilled seafood including prawns, squids and fish. Several dipping sauces are prepared.
I am also pleased to savor Wok-Fried Mussels in kam heong sauce. The aroma of this dish is more pronounced when it is still hot from the wok.
Should diners prefer chilled seafood, marine delicacies like scallops, yabbies, prawns, mussels and crabs are served on ice.
Besides seafood, the barbecue station also prepares grilled meats including chicken, beef and lamb. The meats are largely well marinated.
As for meatless dishes, there are Stir-Fried Mixed Vegetables, Roasted Potatoes and Marinara Farfalle (with tomato sauce). I also enjoy the jar of belinjo crackers. The crackers have a bitter aftertaste that is highly addictive.
Nasi Goreng Kampung and Fried Seafood Koay Teow are available too. However, I am more impressed with the Roasted Chicken. The chicken goes well with plum sauce.
Tom yum is prepared this evening. The spicy Thai soup is served with noodles, fish balls, crab sticks and vegetables. I prefer the soup to be richer and spicier.
Tom yum can also be enjoyed with oysters, mussels and prawns. Tom Yum Seafood is served in a bowl made of young coconut. Coconut flesh blends well with the soup.
Mandi Rice is perhaps the most popular rice dish from the Middle East. Basmati rice, which has a lighter texture than jasmine rice, is used to prepare this dish. Mandi Rice is served with tandoori chicken, which is marinated to perfection and is succulent indeed.
Proceeding to the salad section, there are couscous salad, bell pepper salad, chickpea salad and pineapple salad. Diners can also mix their own salads using fresh vegetables and dressings.
I conclude my meal with desserts like chocolate walnut cake, marble mousse cake, lemon cheesecake, pandan panna cotta and mango jelly. Fresh fruits and ice cream are available too.
Makan Kitchen’s Seafood BBQ Night is priced at RM109.00 net per person. Children and senior citizens get 50% discount off the regular price. Once a month, Makan Kitchen also serves Full Moon BBQ by the swimming pool.
