This article is part of my Chinese New Year 2020 compilation.
Special thanks to DoubleTree Resort By Hilton Penang for extending this food review invitation.
DoubleTree Resort Penang is one of the earliest hotels to give a preview of its upcoming Prosperity Reunion Buffet. This evening’s preview event is held at Makan Kitchen, the all-day dining restaurant of the hotel.
To welcome the Lunar New Year, the buffet line covers several classic Chinese dishes that delight one’s palate. For instance, Fried Glutinous Rice is topped with chopped abalone to give the dish a savory flavor. Meanwhile, Steamed Eight Treasure Chicken is seasoned with oyster sauce and exquisite delicacies. Also worth mentioning is the appetizing Steamed Fish With Nyonya Sauce.
I am also impressed with the Wok-Fried Flower Crabs (cooked in kam heong sauce), Deep-Fried Prawns (cooked with butter) and Stir-Fried Beef (cooked in black pepper sauce). Be sure not to overlook the seafood version of Wok-Fried Cantonese Hor Fun too!
Today’s main highlight is centered on the carving station. Served this evening are Roast Duck, Roast Chicken, Honey BBQ Lamb and Honey BBQ Chicken Wings. I am quite impressed with how well the meats are marinated.
As for seafood on ice, marine delicacies are snow crabs, yabbies, prawns, mussels, scallops and razor clams. Dipping sauces are provided.
My personal favorites at the salad bar are Pomelo With Seafood Salad, Duck Rolls With Mixed Fruits, and Chinese Mandarin & Salmon Tanuki Salad. The appetizers are presented in an attractive manner.
Prawns, sea bass, curried squids, marinated lamb chops, Arabic chicken skewers and chicken sausages are prepared at the grilling station. Condiments include black pepper sauce, mint sauce and Thai chili sauce.
The pastry team is preparing a colorful range of desserts to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth. Shown here are Blueberry Cheesecake, Green Tea Cake, Chocolate Fudge, Creamy Strawberry Rolls, Mandarin Orange Profiteroles, Chendol Pudding and Mango Pudding. The amount of sugar in these desserts is reduced to promote healthy eating.
Finally, the Prosperity Reunion Buffet includes a special counter for Yee Sang. The tossing of Yee Sang is considered auspicious because it symbolizes one achieving greater heights in the upcoming year. Yee Sang is available for take-away too.
DoubleTree Resort’s Prosperity Reunion Buffet is served daily from 24 January 2020 to 2 February 2020. The buffet is priced at 128.00 net per adult. Children under the age of 12 are entitled 50% discount.
As for diners who prefer course dinners, DoubleTree Resort offers two specially curated menus: Abundance Set (RM1,888.00 net) and Golden Prosperity Set (RM2,020.00 net). The price includes wine (2 bottles), whisky or brandy. The set dinners are available between 20 January 2020 and 8 February 2020. Advance booking is required.
