A “pasar,” or market as known in Malaysia, has always been the epitome of earthly delights. Pasar Seri Setia, or Pasar Sungai Way, stands as a testament to this. Its name is derived from the Malay word “Pasar,” signifying a marketplace. It’s a place where you can truly experience the hustle and bustle of life.

From Humble Origins to a Flourishing Hub

When Pasar Seri Setia opened its doors on June 26, 1953, the first-generation market was a modest single-story structure with wooden walls and zinc roofing, housing around 20 stalls.

It wasn’t until 1989 that it underwent a remarkable transformation into the bustling three-story with nearly 300 stalls marketplace we see today. The ground floor hosts the wet market, offering an array of meats and seafood. The first floor houses the dry market, where you can find everything from spices to kitchenware. Finally, the top floor is dedicated to a food court, where gastronomic treasures await.

A Strong Sense of Community

Pasar Seri Setia is more than just a place of commerce; it’s the heartbeat of a community. Many of the stalls here have been run by generations of families, and residents who’ve called this place home for decades frequent it. Must-Try Breakfast Delights

The third-floor food court, with its 24 stalls, is where you’ll discover authentic flavors that have stood the test of time. These stalls, operated by locals, have recipes that have been passed down for generations.

If it’s your first time, don’t miss trying the Mushroom Curry Chee Cheong Fun. This dish, originating from Ipoh in Perak, is now in its third generation of operation.

This famous Mushroom Curry Chee Cheong Fun is made with freshly stewed mushrooms gravy, and a curry sauce that’s not too oily but packed with flavor.

Another gem is the Wantan Mee, started their business since 1975. They’re known for their non-spicy red chili sauce, a unique twist compared to the typical green chili condiment.

There are several beverage operators, which have started operating since the old times. Here, you can enjoy perfectly brewed coffee or tea, served with a side of half-boiled eggs—a classic Malaysian breakfast. The eggs are cracked right into the bowl before serving to you.

Pasar Sungai Way – Verdict

Except for public holidays, Pasar Seri Setia takes a break every second Monday of the month.

Nowadays, the lack of an elevator poses a challenge for elderly visitors, and with neighboring residential areas and schools, the market often grapples with limited parking spaces. So, patience is key when searching for a parking spot.

Once you’ve had your fill at the market, you can explore the Koridor Sejarah Kampung Baru Seri Setia, also known as Sungai Way New Village Historical Museum, located just across the road.
