Asian Grilled Thursday Dinner Buffet
This mid-week gem offers a fantastic opportunity to indulge in a delicious spread without the usual weekend crowd. To enhance the dining experience, Le Méridien Petaling Jaya has transformed its Thursday buffet into a BBQ feast. The casual and relaxing atmosphere of a BBQ makes it the perfect way to unwind after a long day at work.
For the ongoing Asian Grilled Thursday Dinner Buffet, Le Méridien Petaling Jaya is introducing an ‘Ikan Bakar’ themed BBQ. The menu features a selection of popular fishes among Malaysians.
This evening, seven types of fresh catch are spread out before our eyes: red snapper, stingray, seabass, tilapia, haven’s carp, pomfret and catfish. The fishes are incredibly fresh, a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality.
There are four grilling styles that use specially-prepared sauces: Malay, Chinese, Indian and Western.
How to Enjoy Your Ikan Bakar Experience
To savor Ikan Bakar, just follow these simple steps:
- Grab a table number: Get a table number from your own table.
- Choose your fish: Browse the enticing display of fresh seafood and select your desired fish.
- Place your order: Pass your chosen fish along with your table number to the kitchen staff.
- Customize your flavor: Indicate your preferred cooking style and sauce.
- Relax and wait: Your order will be delivered to your table when ready.
Each fish is first pan-fried to seal in its natural juices, then transferred to the grill for a smoky finish. This two-step process results in tender and flavorful pieces of fish.
Our Recommendation
While there are countless ways to enjoy grilled fish, here are several recommendations to kickstart your culinary adventure. Feel free to experiment and discover your perfect combination!
Malay Style: Stingray & Catfish
The Malay-style ikan bakar is a classic dish featuring spicy and flavorful dipping sauces. Popular choices are air assam, budu, sambal kicap and more.
Complement your Malay-style ikan bakar with assorted ulam and salted fish.
Jantung pisang (banana blossom) and pucuk paku (fern shoots) are quintessential Malay ulam. These tend to complement the rich flavors of ikan bakar perfectly.
Fresh stingray retains its tender yet firm texture after grilling. The fish’s subtle sweetness complements the bold flavors of condiments.
Catfish (Ikan Keli) is another excellent choice for Malay-style ikan bakar. Its firm, meaty texture holds up well on the grill. The catfish’s mild flavor is best paired with spicy sambal.
Our plate of Malay-style ikan bakar is a pure delight! The combination of grilled fish, fragrant ulam and spicy sambal perfectly captures the essence of rustic Malay cuisine.
In addition to being incredibly fresh, one of the standout features of ikan bakar is the perfect grilling technique. Each piece is cooked to perfection, resulting in a smoky char. This is a testament to the chef’s culinary skill.
Chinese Style: Pomfret & Red Snapper
For those who prefer a touch of Chinese flair, we recommend the Pomfret and Red Snapper. These fishes are popular among Chinese diners due to their firm texture and mild flavor.
The Pomfret, with its slightly stronger taste, pairs perfectly with the Sweet and Sour sauce. This classic combination is a crowd-pleaser especially among children.
On the other hand, the Red Snapper‘s delicate flavor benefits from the zesty kick of Thai Chili sauce. The sauce’s sweetness balances the fish’s mildness, creating a refreshing taste profile.
For the Chinese-style grilled fish, we recommend enjoying the fish on its own before dipping it into the Sweet and Sour or Thai Chili sauce. This allows you to appreciate the fish’s natural flavor before enhancing it with sauces. Overloading the fish with sauces may mask the delicate flavor of the fish.
Indian Style: Haven’s Carp & Red Snapper
Let’s delve into Indian Style grilled fish. Concocted from a complex blend of Indian spices, Masala sauce imparts aromatic and rich flavors to grilled fish. On the other hand, the creamy Kerala sauce offers a luxurious contrast to the smoky char.
Haven’s Carp is a freshwater fish known for its firm, flaky texture. Its mild flavor perfectly complements the rich and creamy Kerala sauce.
In contrast, the Red Snapper‘s sweet taste provides the ideal base for bold flavors of masala.
For the Indian-style grilled fish, the unique selling point is the rich and creamy dipping sauces. We recommend fully immersing the grilled fish in the sauces before taking a bite. The combination of the tender fish and the flavorful sauces is truly delightful.
Western Style: Seabass & Tilapia
Now, let’s explore Western Style grilled fish. Known for its simplicity, this style focuses on highlighting the fish’s natural flavors. Lemon Butter sauce is a classic choice, combining the tangy zest of lemon with the richness of butter. Alternatively, the Tomato sauce offers a sweet and savory complement to the fish.
With its delicate and slightly sweet flavor, Seabass goes well with tangy notes of Lemon Butter sauce. The buttery richness complements the fish’s delicate texture, while the lemon juice adds a refreshing zing.
Tilapia‘s mild flavor makes it a versatile companion for tomato sauce. The acidity of tomato sauce complements the fish’s neutral taste, creating a well-balanced flavor profile.

Tonight, the noodle station is serving up a Malaysian classic: Asam Laksa! Renowned for its tangy and zesty flavor profile, this dish is a global favorite and considered one of the world’s healthiest foods.
The key to delicious Asam Laksa is the rich, fish-based broth. Cooked in a claypot and topped with various ingredients, this dish is satisfying indeed.
