We have the pleasure of dining at The Emperor today. This Chinese restaurant at Dorsett Grand Subang is renowned for its fine dim sum and Cantonese fare.

We previously enjoyed The Emperor’s Shanghainese Dim Sum Fare and Weekend Dim Sum Buffet. Today, we are ordering from the recently revamped à la carte menu.

Our dim sum experience begins with a pot of Chinese tea. It is customary to sip hot tea while savoring dim sum, as tea helps to cleanse the palate between bites.

Before long, our table is covered entirely by dim sum dishes! There is a good mixture of steamed and fried ones. Let’s check out each dim sum delicacy in front of us!

Steamed Classics
The Steamed Abalone Chicken & Prawn Dumpling is a luxurious take on a classic. The filling is a succulent mixture of fresh prawns and minced chicken, while the star is ultimately the plump abalone perched on top. The abalone provides tender texture with subtle briny notes that elevate the enjoyment of this dumpling.

Steamed “Extra Ordinary” Sauce Anchovies Dumpling is a brilliant fusion of classic dim sum and local flavors. We love the complementary roles of spicy chili oil and fried anchovies. These ingredients give the dumpling a familiar Malaysian touch!

Beneath its striking appearance, the Steamed Blue Pea Flower Prawn Dumpling delivers an intense burst of umami flavors. Its vibrant blue color comes naturally from blue pea flowers (bunga telang), a coloring often used in traditional Nyonya kuih.

The Steamed Shrimp & Chive Crystal Dumpling is wrapped with delicate, translucent dough skin. The skin is so thin that you can see the fresh fillings within, yet it is strong enough to hold the dumpling together. The preparation of this dumpling is a testament to the chef’s mastery of dim sum.

Steamed Seaweed Chicken & Prawn Dumpling is a classic that has stood the test of time. The briny seaweed not only complements the filling, but also gives the dumpling a beautiful green hue.

Crispy Bites
The Deep Fried “Ham Sui Gok” Hometown Food immediately captures the eye with its bright orange and adorable carrot shape! Biting into the crispy shell reveals the authentic taste of a “ham sui gok”, a hometown dish which brings warmth to the heart.

Absolutely no one can resist the Deep-Fried Bean Curd Rolls with Salted Egg! The crispy skin crumbles with a satisfying crunch, revealing a savory filling made of salted egg yolk.

The Deep-Fried Prawn Dumpling with Salad is another mouthwatering delicacy. The dumpling is fried to a golden crisp, giving way to juicy prawn filling. The accompanying mayonnaise cuts through the rich filling for a balanced bite.

A fantastic new creation, Deep-Fried Crab Meat with Salad Dumpling, offers a modern twist to the classic dim sum. The crispy exterior shatters to reveal the creamy filling made from crab meat. Crowned with gold leaves, this dish offers a perfect balance of textures and a touch of luxury.

The Deep-Fried Ice Cream Durian is a surprising addition to the menu. It is truly remarkable that the exterior stays crispy even after being out for a while. The durian taste is so intense and pure, making every bite exploding with genuine durian goodness!

With its golden-brown skin, the Pan-Fried Beef Bun with Spring Onion offers satisfying crunch and aroma. Biting into the fluffy bun, the beef filling bursts with juicy flavors.

You definitely must try the Steamed Charcoal Bun with Salted Egg Custard, a dish so addictive that you will quickly find yourself wanting more! The bun is filled with salted egg custard which oozes out like lava as soon as you bite it. Be careful as the rich filling may still be piping hot!

Beyond the Basket
Besides dim sum, The Emperor also offers an à la carte menu of Cantonese dishes. The dish of Stir-Fried Kai Lan has charred “wok hei” flavor, a hallmark of skilled Cantonese cooking.

Sweet Endings
Last but not least, we end our meal with a trio of classic desserts. Chilled Herbal Jelly with Honey Syrup has subtle bitterness that is perfectly balanced by honey. Next, the Chilled Longan Sea Coconut is a great way to cool down on a hot day. Meanwhile, the Red Bean Soup is incredibly fragrant thanks to the infusion of tangerine peel.
